Idols All Around

Idolatry of things unworthy of worship,
From within mortal hearts is born:
Such as that of wealth, houses, cars,
And people reverenced, adorned

Idolatry is conceived in desire for power;
It is of selfish reasons wrought;
Lifeless things may have our affections;
So many are greatly sought.

Some idols are set up in the mind:
Those of self-importance and wit,
When one thinks to be so wise
As to be absolutely "it".

Some make idols of the media,
And entertainments galore;
Music, movies, telephones.
Need I to list yet more?

Some spend great amounts of time
Listening to repetitive "news".
Some are eager to keep up with
All the latest movie reviews.

Then, there's idols of finery;
Fine dress, a perfect lawn;
Or, the fanciest house in town
Over which some may fawn.

This world simply wreaks of idols!
They can be in our homes,
If we esteem anything more
Than GOD --- just GOD alone.

May we carefully examine our hearts,
Honestly, humbly, prayerfully too,
Toward the end of giving all praise
To GOD, LIFE-GIVER for me and you!

HE is the GIVER of all good gifts:
Food and drink, beauty and voice,
Shelters, clothing, --- everything good!
May praising HIM be our choice!

By the mercies of God,

Awake to GOD's Mercies

Awaken heart, to GOD's mercies!
Aren't you wondrously blest?
Do you not drink of the River of Life?
Then, to others, HIS Grace, confess.

Awake! Look at other's needs;
Take notice of their pain.
Awake, and try to find a way
To minister comfort if you can;

And, take care to give all praise
To GOD through Jesus Christ,
Who laid down His life for your sins
And redeemed you at horrible price.

By the mercies of God,

Are You Alive?

Are you standing? Are you sitting?
Are you resting while you think?
Are you eating? Maybe, reading?
Does your voice work? Can you speak?

Do your hands hold pen and paper?
Are you strong enough to stand?
Are you blessed to chew your food?
Can you see the skies and land?

Does your heart work? Is it pumping
Vital blood up to your brain?
To your arms and hands and fingers?
To head and feet and all between?

Are digestive processes working,
Breaking down food for your good?
Tell me, what's your heart's condition.
Are you thankful unto GOD?

Are you thankful for the wonders
GOD has placed, child, within you?
Do you realize, at this moment,
HE is the strength for all you do?

Then, let your inward man rejoice
To hear the very Name of GOD.
HE is life and breath to us.
HIS glorious Name, let us applaud!

By the mercies of God,

Devotion

A moment, an hour, what part of a day
Do we spend in devotion to GOD?
How much do we consider His power,
At HIM, o'erwhelmingly awed?

Do we find we love to commune with HIM?
Are we willing to lay all else aside,
To forget earthly things for a while,
So that spiritual things may arise.

What comfort and peace, what hope renewed,
Is found in the wonderful name of GOD!
O what privilege to commune with HIM,
By way of righteousness of Jesus' blood!

By the mercies of God,

Our Need

LORD, we need THEE in this hour,
Here in daily walks in life.
We need THEE when trials come,
When dark troubles cause us strife.

We need THEE O Comforter,
In day-time and in night-time hours.
We desire Thy calming presence;
How we plead, Thy mercy showers!

We're thankful to THEE for Thy Grace,
For wonders of eternal LOVE.
Praises be Thine, now, forever,
Glorious GOD, reigning above!

By the mercies of God,

GOD's Infallible Power

In all reaches of the heavens;
In every place of the earth;
In their heights and depths and widths,
The power of GOD is at work.

Holding stars where HE placed them;
Forming clouds; sending rain;
Keeping bright the sunshine;
Sending winds o'er hill and plain;

Holding up the mighty mountains;
Making waters constantly run;
Causing seeds to sprout and grow:
All these, by the MASTER, done.

O how wonderfully trustworthy,
Is this ONE WHO gives us breath!
Praises, we'll yet live by HIS power,
When our flesh succumbs to death!

By the mercies of God,

Place of Rest

LORD, lead our spirits to THEE, where,
Is found, a gentle "place of rest" there:
Where worldly thought can't enter in,
There in Thy heart, devoid of sin.

Let us rest there o'er worldly plain;
To hear, a while, but Graceful strain.
Give us, Thy perfect Love, to see
That, by Thy Sacrifice, we're free.

Resting in THEE, our spirits soar
Away from trials, in regions o'er;
Having, within us, Hope renewed;
Sheltered by perfect LOVE, by YOU!

By the mercies of God,

Wonder at THEE

O THOU WHO harnesses the winds;
THOU WHO colors the sky;
WHO holds the mighty oceans,
Art HE, on WHOM I rely.

THOU WHO gives voice to brooklets;
THOU, Composer of birds' songs;
THOU, Provider, for all wildlife;
Unto THEE, my heart belongs.

THOU, Sculptor, of babies' features,
Creator of goslings' down,
My heart is filled with wonder
At THEE with glory crowned!

To Run after Truth

Is belief in GOD enough for me?
Am I a busy disciple to be?
Will I faithfully, after Truth, run,
After the way of Christ Thy Son?

Shall I settle to rest at ease,
While others sail embattled seas;
Or, Godly things, daily pursue,
In whatever duties, mine to do?

Shall I be silent about my faith;
Or, gladly sing Thy wondrous Grace?
Shall I forget Christ died for me;
How, His Love has set me free?

Careless ease, O GOD, forbid!
Let me, of selfishness, be rid.
Guide me in purpose, deed, and thought;
Help me to walk, LORD, as I ought;

Bless me to be like a flourishing tree,
To produce much fruit unto THEE;
That, when my life on earth is done,
It may be said, "After Truth, she's run".

Perfect Peace and Rejoicing

When every labor shall have ceased
Beneath the faithful sun;
When the machineries of man,
Are halted, nevermore to run;

When all trials, hurts, and griefs,
And tribulations are o'er;
When sorrows of GOD's people
Have passed, to be no more;

When all storms of life have ended;
When all harvests have ceased;
When all the redeemed are finally,
From all that is earthly, released;

When all the sheep of HIS pastures
Are safe in Heaven, at Home,
Living in realms of bliss with Jesus,
Who did, sin and death, overcome:

There to know only perfect peace,
Where, persecutions shall never come.
All in GOD's presence shall be rejoicing,
Praising HIM Almighty, Three-in-ONE!

Consolation in Hope

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
HOLY BIBLE, KJV, Hebrews 6:16-20
"16 For men verily swear by the greater: and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all strife.
17 Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath:
18 That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:
19 Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;
20 Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Consolation in Hope

As a problem I pondered today,
A solution, freely, did appear.
How could this have happened so,
But that my LORD does care?

HE even solves little things for me.
What cause have I to fret?
My LORD has never failed me!
Mercifully, HE cares for me yet.

What of the lies Satan hurls?
What of his spouted venomous things?
What of how he rages against GOD?
What of evils, against us, he brings?

Only a while will GOD permit these.
We've Hope to lay hold on in this life.
The more we cling to GOD's promises,
The less we're affected by strife.

By the mercies of God,

Our Heart's Appeal

When each tear, our grief belies;
When from heart comes mournful cries;
Though mortals haven't power to heal;
O LORD, hear our heart's appeal

For peace, comfort, strength of THEE;
Grant healing, we pray; from pain, set free.
Be with us in this present storm;
Bless us, on wings of Love, to be borne.

We thank THEE for Thy loving mercy
Unto, upon us, through past days;
Thy will be done, our FATHER in Heaven;
And, unto THEE, be all the praise.

There is One

There's One Who knows all our cares;
One on Whom we can depend,
One Who is Truth everlasting;

THEE We Sing

O LORD, Creator, THEE we sing;
To THEE we look in awe.
For, THOU has been so merciful;
Our Savior, and our GOD.

When we stumble, THOU art here
To bear us, lest we fall.
No greater Name LORD do we hear,
Than Thine, great All-in-all.

Without Thy Spirit, we'd be blind,
No good thing could we see;
Nor, without Thy blessings, live;
GOD of eternity.

Praise to Thy Name from this low plain!
Praise to THEE evermore!
Worthy art THOU, eternal ONE,
Whose Name, great hosts adore!

Are You in Chapter Seven

Is your experience like that in Romans: 7,
Described by Apostle Paul long ago?
Doesn't sin that is dwelling in your body
War against your spirit here below?

Can you say that you, like the apostle,
Leave off things that you will to do;
And, find yourself doing what you hate?
Could you say, of your life, this is true?

Do you feel you live there in chapter 7?
Well, do take time; read further on.
Take time to read Romans, chapter 8,
About those in Christ Jesus, GOD's Son.

Read, how there's no condemnation to them
Who walk after the Spirit, not the flesh.
Paul said "the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus
Hath made me free from the law of sin and death."

---"If Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin;
but the Spirit is life because of righteousness."
Hold on to these truths! Read again and again.
Rejoice in Christ's victory! His mercies, confess!

If Christ be in us; our lives are in HIM,
Safely, surely, eternally kept.
He conquered sin and death upon the cross!
That sin doesn't own you, accept!

THOU art Wonderful

O THOU gracious LORD,
WHO gives sun and rain;
WHO comforts our hearts;
WHO relieves our pain,

None else has such mercy
And storehouses full
Of constant provisions.
THOU art wonderful!

None else has such power,
Such wisdom, such Love,
As THEE WHO doth reign
In Heaven above!

Praises be Thine
Unparalleled GOD,
All-worthy of worship;
Thy Name, we applaud!

Cloaked by Mist

All about, the hills and meadows
Are covered by a heavy mist.
It's good time for meditation,
When all is hushed like this.

How I enjoy being outdoors
A little while at a time:
Dividing Calla Lily bulbs;
Piddling with plants of mine.

Why think such days are bad?
A misty cloak can be enjoyed.
While temperatures are moderate,
Winter gardening can be employed.

Bless Me Where I'm Planted, LORD

Bless me where I'm planted, LORD;
Feed, that I spiritually grow.
Prune away bad tendencies;
Lest, recklessly, I go.

Bless me where I'm planted, LORD;
Enlighten me to see,
Thy blessings all around me,
Here, there, in between.

Bless me where I'm planted, LORD;
Help mine ears to hear,
When Thy Spirit speaks to me;
Grant understanding, clear.

Bless me where I'm planted, LORD;
Mold my heart, within,
Till love abounds for others,
That I abhor my selfish sin.

Bless me where I'm planted, LORD,
To tend toward the sky ---
Toward the things of righteousness,
Toward THEE WHO reigns on high!

What Births Discontent

What births the discontent
That creeps into our minds?
Is it born of ingratitude
For blessings from on high?

Does it arise when we forget
The goodness of our LORD?
Does it come of negligence
To pray and read His Word?

Is it from seeds of selfishness,
Which like the brambles grow?
O to have more thankful hearts,
Loving, faithful, here below.

For, when a heart is full of thanks
And concern for others here,
There is no room for discontent
That elicits gloom and fear.

LORD, help us to die to selves;
To stay our eyes upon Thy Love;
To commune with THEE more,
To set affections on things above!

By the mercies of God,

Imprisoning Thoughts

LORD, I know not what to pray;
Nor, can I supply that needed today
For a loved one who suffers so,
Wandering, troubled, here below:

From pain to joy, to pain again;
A lasting peace, unable to win.
Would'st THOU, Thy great mercies, show;
And, lead him, guide him, here below?

Would'st THOU drive away his fears;
Be peace to him; replace his tears?
O, with healing, touch his heart
Holy comforts to impart!

Please forgive! Strengthen today;
Enlighten; drive dark thoughts away;
Be his comfort, LORD of peace.
From imprisoning thoughts, I pray, release.

By the mercies of God,

To See Thy Love

What lies ahead for me, LORD?
What things for me to do?
Though, the future I cannot see,
Cement my trust in YOU,

That I not waver, faint, and fall;
That I not tend toward despair;
Nor, believe I walk alone;
But, know that YOU are here:

Here, when I walk in shadows;
Here, when my path is light;
Here, when all seems still;
Here, during darkest night;

Here, no matter the trials;
Here, when doubts arise;
In my heart, wherever I am;
O THOU GOD of earth and skies.

Greater than this world's wealth,
Is Thy Love unto me:
Please grant that all my days,
This glorious truth I see.

O Sing Now of GOD

[I wrote this while the tune of O Worship the King, hymn # 8 in Old School Hymnal no. 11, ran through my mind]

O sing now of GOD;
Yes, sing of His power!
Confess that HE keeps
Our souls every hour!

Sing faithfully, joyfully,
Praise to the Name
Of GOD, Holy FATHER,
Forever the same!

O Sing of that Love,
So faithful and true,
Of Christ who redeemed
Such as me and you!

Sing praises! Sing praises!
Praise the precious Name,
Of Jesus Christ, Savior,
Forever the same!

Sing of Holy Ghost
Who dwells in our hearts;
Who comforts us so;
Who, GOD's Love, imparts.

Extol HIM! Yes, praise HIM,
All of our days through!
Praise Three-in-ONE GOD,
WHO loves me and you!

How Big is GOD

How big is GOD?
Immeasurably bigger than our cares!
Bigger than the pains and hurts
Which often cause us tears!

Speaking of GOD's Greatness

The ONE WHO made the lovely tree
Is greater than I could dream to be.
HIS sun and moon, each twinkling star,
Surpasses mortals' works by far.

Each rushing stream, each waterfall,
Singing of HIS greatness, call.
The harsh, the cold, the gentle wind
Inspires, GOD's glory, to attend.

The mountains, valleys, plains, and seas;
Shrubs' and flowers' diverse leaves:
All reflect of the wisdom of GOD;
As does the bounty of drink and food.

Then, why do we fail to give HIM praise
WHO's blessed and kept us all our days.
Can we not speak of HIS greatness too?
Isn't this the very thing we're called to do?

To Pray Rightly

As begins this brand new day,
LORD, bless me, teach me how to pray,
To pray sincerely with thankful theme,
To humbly pray to THEE Supreme;

To pray for those who suffer pain;
For all who need comforting again;
Even, for our enemies as we're taught;
For peace, while we're in turmoil caught;

To pray for those who've long been ill;
To pray THOU would'st, in mercy, heal.
Holy Spirit, please frame unuttered pleas;
Then, O Lord Jesus, intercede for me!

As Surely

As sure as clouds cross the horizon;
As surely as the winds do blow;
As surely as rain falls from above
To give drink to the earth below;

As surely as the rainbow's colors
Remind of GOD's promise to man,
Not to destroy all of earth with water ---
That HE'd never flood all of it again;

As surely as there's light at daybreak;
As surely as runs the faithful sun;
And, just as sure as moon and stars shine;
We're kept by the THREE-in-ONE!

As surely as tides run shore-ward;
And, then, return sea-ward again;
As surely as creeks and rivers run,
We're blessed by Almighty I AM.

As sure as there's songbirds singing;
As sure as honey is made by bees;
As sure as trees are rooted in earth;
As surely as branches have leaves;

No, far more certain than all these things
Is GOD's Love with which we're loved.
His Love is as sure as HE is eternal;
For, Christ returned, victoriously, above!

Author of Life

Did you do something to become you?
Tell, did you choose to live and breathe?
Did your mind precede your body?
Or, do you, your Creator's Word believe?

Do you believe GOD made Creation?
Do you trust HIM, the living WORD?
Tell, where did your spirit come from?
Whence, your faith, but from the LORD?

Do you believe you have Salvation?
Do you trust Christ finished His work?
Do you think you could add to it?
Not one iota of the Law did He shirk!

Jesus was the perfect sacrifice for sin;
He verily became sin for you and me;
HE, the Lamb of GOD, gave His life
To set GOD's fallen children free.

Were you there before Creation?
Before given life, could you choose
To love GOD the FATHER, Son, and Holy Spirit?
HE's Author of life physical, and spiritual life too.

By the mercies of God,
