Tender-Age Readings

Clear and rich, a voice rang out
And carried through the air.
Unmistakably, it was from
A little girl sitting near.

But 7 years old, she sang the hymn,
Familiar; yet, now, read from book.
I stole a quick glance at her little face;
It held a sweetly satisfied look.

Now, she sings as the grown-ups,
As the ones she'd looked up to.
How quickly she learned to read,
A goal so recently pursued.

Later at home, her mommy told me,
She found her sitting in bed
With Holy Bible in her lap,
Searching for what the pastor had read.

"What are you doing, Mommy asked?"
"I'm looking for Genesis 15."
It held the topic we'd studied at church.
Little ears hear; children glean.

She knew what chapter we'd read from.
At home, she wanted to read more.
What joy to hear of children happy
To read from GOD's Word's store!

Blessings of GOD be upon all of tender age and tender heart!
By the mercies of God,

In Need of THEE

LORD, we stand before THEE in need,
In need of comfort, strength, and peace.
We need, as ever, Thy sustaining Love,
Thy merciful kindnesses, for relief.

Lift us up o'er life's stormy clouds;
Bless us, Thy gifts of Grace, to see
That THOU art the Way unto us
And exceeding good things come from THEE!

No trials we have can steal Thy Love;
For all our great hurts, THOU art balm.
O guide us, LORD; lead us each day;
Deliver us from evil and harm.

Lead us not into temptations;
But, into Thy pathways of peace.
O'ershadow us, LORD; hold us close;
To our poor hearts, speak "peace".

By the mercies of God,

Morning Thanksgiving

Thank YOU, LORD, for life and breath,
For eyes to view this day,
For ears to hear the birds' sweet songs,
For Thy mercies along the way.

Thank YOU for sustaining Love;
Thank YOU for Thy Grace;
Thank YOU for lovingkindnesses,
GOD ever-present in every place!

Thank YOU, LORD, WHO art our peace;
Thank YOU --- our HOPE, most-holy LOVE.
Thank YOU, THOU hast touched our hearts.
All-glorious, Thy Name, O GOD above!

By the mercies of God,

Wrap Her in Blessedness

LORD, hold this little one in Thine arms;
Rock her in the bosom of Thy Love;
Forbid pain; wrap her in blessedness;
These things, we pray, O GOD above!

Uphold and comfort all who love her;
Give each one a Heaven-sent view,
And wonderful peace unto each heart
That longs for her to have joy anew;

Give her health to run through fields,
To sing and play with those she loves.
Thy will be done; THOU knowest best.
O grant relief, in the Name of Thy Son!

By the mercies of God,

Man, Horse, and Briar

This is a tale of man, horse, and briar,
And of blind determination, sorely placed.
Read on; and, tell me what you think.
Did horse, man, or briar, cancel this race?

A battle of wills was a'brewing
Between a young man and his horse.
The horse, still young, and barely trained,
Would not be caught or put to course.

The young steed preferred to run about free,
Out in the pasture with the farm mule;
He'd come willingly, at times, to feed-bucket;
But, believe me, that horse was no fool.

Tossing his head, in contempt, with a snort,
He galloped away with the mule in the lead.
To whistles and calls, he paid no mind;
Nor, would he yield and come to the feed.

Instead, he galloped toward the piney hill.
The man, with "Catch him or bust" mindset,
On foot, just as fast as he could run,
Confidently, hard, after the horse, went.

A short while later, the "defeated" returned,
Bloodied all around one side of his neck.
Never chase a horse through piney woods
With saw briers hanging down sharp and thick!

I wonder, did that horse whinny or "snicker"?
The man had been swung about in mid-stride,
By a long, black briar vine, tough, unyielding.
His ill-gotten wound, the man couldn't hide.

:) An old memory

By the mercies of God,

Squirrel in Review

Is that a squirrel on that white oak branch,
Blending, melding its color with the bark,
Completely stretched out, hard to detect?
Yes! A flick of tail; and, he starts

Descending in rounds of the tree trunk,
Easily, down, to the leaf-mold floor;
Then, he stops abruptly and scans about.
I watch intently from dining room door.

Across the driveway, quickly, he scurries;
And, jumps on a planter, yet nearer.
Standing upright in a "crossed-arm" pose,
He stands, head bent, as if in prayer.

He takes stock again of things in his view;
And, back to the driveway he goes.
Cautiously, he circles round the deck;
Most likely, he's following his nose.

Over at the corner hangs a bird feeder;
And, awaiting, beneath it, a feast ---
Scattered seeds galore to his liking ---
Smorgasbord for the furry little beast!

By the mercies of God,

Bound by Love

HOLY BIBLE, KJV, 1 Peter 2:9
But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

~~~~~~~~~~
Bound, by GOD's all-wondrous Grace!
Bound --- kindred, from many a place!
Bound with desire to worship the KING;
Bound with joy, HIS praises to sing!
Bound, made family by one blood ---
By that of Christ; a royal priesthood!
Bound by LOVE eternal and pure;
In HIM, having Hope steadfast and sure!
Of GOD's blessings, then, O sing;
For His mercies, let praises ring:
For His LOVE, for His matchless Grace,
Thank HIM; fervently seek His Face!
By the mercies of God,
O'erwhelming LOVE
GOD, present here --- while being there,
Is in all places. HE's everywhere,
Providing afar, providing here,
Keeping us by unparalleled care!
Hearing countless pleas of prayer ---
In His Name --- from diverse bow'rs,
With Love no mortal can comprehend
To measure its reach, its depth, its span,
HE mercifully blesses the children of Grace
With comforts, with the smiles of His Face.
O what HE suffered to save us from hell,
None can measure, nor rightly tell!
HE's GOD of all glory, all wisdom, all power;
LOVE immeasurable; Stronghold and Tower,
Friend of helpless ones --- weak and faint.
He sends rains upon both unjust and saint ---
The saint, being just, only in HIM ---
In GOD's Son --- Savior and Friend!
Lost in depths of the unbounded sea
Of eternal LOVE, may we ever be!
O'erwhelming LOVE, rich and true!
Beauty for ashes --- for me and you!
Liberty, in Jesus, Hope and peace!
In HIM, from darkness, sweet release!
By the mercies of God,
Praying for Wondrous Blessings
Praying one blessing leads to another,
That each new one be greater than the last;
That GOD will heap comforts on and about you;
That, soon, all your pains will have passed;
That you find joy in each new day;
That contentment will radiate from your face;
That all who know you may marvel ---
How the LORD blessed you with His Grace!
By the mercies of God,
THOU Alone
When shadows of the world encircle;
When life seems but sad and dim;
When we cannot, the path, determine;
LORD, LIGHT, and WAY; direct us, again.
Have mercy; bless us; be strength unto us;
Lend us wisdom, Thy truths, to see.
Shine in our hearts O GOD of Life!
We live, breathe, and move, only by THEE;
Only in THEE are any righteous;
Only by THEE are any wise;
Only of THEE do any have strength;
THOU alone art good, almighty, all-wise!
By the mercies of God,
Fast Goes the Night
Fast goes the night, this lovely night,
With all its twinkling merry stars.
Away, away, so fast away
Its darkness passes to regions far!
The moon, too, slips quickly away,
Nearing horizon of the far hills,
Soon to be gone from my sight;
Yet, stays, wonder GOD instills,
Wonder, at the beauty of night,
As I consider heavens o'erhead!
Peace speaks deep within my heart;
I think of eternal LIGHT, instead.
Lesser lights, the moon and stars;
Greater than these, the blazing sun.
Praise be to GOD, the greatest LIGHT,
WHO shines upon us --- every one!
By the mercies of God,
Don't Live in Discouragement
Have you been given a dread report
From someone of high estate?
Do you feel there is no hope,
As if your life is devoid of Grace?
The future holds for you, but trouble?
That, it's useless to further seek
Help, and strength, and understanding?
You'd just as well give up and weep?
Don't you buy into any such garbage!
Don't give up! And, furthermore,
Don't lose sight of the Hope within you!
Study on wonders from GOD's store.
HE is not bound by anything ---
Not, moments, hours; not, length of days.
There is no lack at all in HIM!
HE's more than worthy of highest praise.
Things absolutely impossible to man
Pose no threat at all to GOD.
Leading us into the great unknown
Is HE --- the all-glorious LORD.
Think of past blessings --- all from GOD!
Remember, all blessings are from His store;
O consider His wondrous LOVE!
His mercy shall forever endure!
By the mercies of God,
To the Matchless ONE
For all the moments, hours, and days;
For each of the years we've lived;
For life, for breath, and strength to move:
Praises to THEE, GOD of Heav'n!
Praises for Love, for peace, for Hope;
And, for mercies of Thy Grace;
Praises for Light, for guidance here;
Praises, that we may seek Thy Face!
We thank THEE, wholly-glorious GOD,
For the riches in Thy WORD.
Praises for comfort THOU hast giv'n!
THOU art matchless, wonderful LORD!
By the mercies of God,
"Bustin Out"
Signs of Spring are "bustin out"
Here and there, all around:
Things like crocus and daffodils.
Some seasonal chores I've found.
O but my roses need pruning!
A thick leaf carpet awaits my rake ---
Tulip leaves are pushing through.
Procrastination, my mistake!
Swiss Chard has made appearance,
As have shoots of various bulbs.
Ivy has claimed more territory.
Pale, the foliage of my foxgloves.
It's time to fertilize again;
Time for rake, shovel, and 'fork;
"High time" to dig, divide, or move ---
A great time for some outside work!
Consider the Acorn
A fascination to children,
Seated firmly in its bowl;
The acorn is good for wildlife.
What mystery does it hold?
What potential has it,
When it drops to the ground
And slides beneath the leaves,
To become, perhaps, soil-bound?
What makes an acorn sprout?
Its root, reach deep in the soil?
It doesn't labor to be fed.
To drink, it doesn't toil.
The little acorn, with life indwelling,
When acted upon, then, grows ---
When sunlight warms the earth;
If the earth is moist below;
If it sprouts into good soil,
Which holds nutrients it needs;
If conditions are favorable.
Its strength is given, you see. What is its greatest potential?
To be transformed into a mighty oak tree
With canopy, spreading far and wide,
That produces much food and seed;
With leafy branches, coverts,
Where birds can build their nests;
To give shade from the burning sun
To creatures needing rest.
A nut --- a sapling --- a mighty tree
That could be cut for fuel or boards:
An acorn holds great potential.
Great wonders, within it, are stored!
GOD formed the acorn --- its bowl and hull;
HE authored the life it holds within;
HE acts upon it with sun, rain, and soil.
HE proves HIS power again and again!
Gone On
At Home, present with the Lord,
What joy the child of GOD must know,
In that perfect land of peace,
Unknown to pilgrims here below.
O friends, now comfort one another!
A loved one has to Heaven gone;
Yet, we're embraced by Love eternal!
Let's praise the LORD in heartfelt song,
For the blessings known in this life,
For the dear one who's gone on,
Who now praises GOD --- in Heaven!
We remain, but not alone.
In GOD's WORD, we find comfort;
We find peace by glorious Grace;
The Holy Spirit abides within us.
One day, we too, shall see GOD's face!
By the mercies of God,
The Healing Salve
You say your dreams are broken?
Your life is all undone?
Your fondest hopes are shattered;
Your plans, ruined, every one?
For broken hearts, there's healing.
Tear-filled eyes shall dry.
For weariness, strength is given.
Darkness is banished by Light.
May God help us to live in His Light,
To leave broken dreams in dust,
To shake off our fears and put on faith,
In HIM, to place all our trust!
You say you've taken some wrong turns?
You've failed? All of us have!
You say you're wounded, undone?
GOD's Love is the healing Salve!
By the mercies of God,
From Shambles to Joy
My life once lay in shambles.
I knew myself, a broken shell.
I had no power for my healing.
I sank deep into despair's well.
Grief! How grief seized upon me!
All my confidence was gone.
My life, my world, was shaken.
Such heartbreak, I'd never known!
But, LOVE saw and shone about me;
IT came to me on healing wings.
The GOD of Heaven comforted me;
And, of His mercies, my heart sings.
Praises be to GOD for comfort!
Praises, for His healing Love!
Praises, for Hope HE has given!
Praises, for gifts from above!
By the mercies of God,
Overcome for Me
LORD, to YOU, I bring my heartache;
LORD, to YOU, I bring my pain;
For, YOU alone have power to help.
Please grant me relief again.
I am weak; THOU art almighty;
I need strength, all-glorious ONE.
I need healing and comfort, LORD.
For mercies, unto THEE, I come.
Be it Thy will --- unto Thy glory,
Grant my desires to me.
Lift me out of my distresses
To tell and sing the Love of THEE!
In the Name of Jesus, I plead;
In His Name, these things I ask.
Almighty LOVE, overcome for me
The hurts of this terrible trial's blast!
By the mercies of God,
